Homecoming had gone off without a hitch. Almost. After picking up Veronica, he'd ordered flowers for Phoebe. Willow and Hermione had provide the pumpkin coach. He'd borrowed Old Man from Pippi to pull it. And Isabel had transformed Phoebe's shoes into glass slippers. He'd left a note for Phoebe along with the jewelry he'd bought her to go downstairs, where her horse-drawn carriage had taken her to dinner, and then to the Homecoming dance. There were pictures and dancing, and Phoebe was having the time of her life.

Then he'd run into Logan at the punchbowl which ended in a fight that fortunately for Logan had been interrupted by walter and the Doctor. Another few minutes and he might have killed him, and strangely that thought didn't bother him as much as it should have.

Saturday he'd had detention that Phale had given him after he threatened Joxer in Prophecy. The moron had it coming, though; Bel refused to back down from that. Hence...detention. It wasn't a bad detention, since there was fighting, then Dr. Wilson had talked to him over lunch, and then more fighting. He still bore the injuries from that fight, knife slashes across his arms and chest. But fighting felt good.

Then he'd gotten a message from Angel to meet him at J,GoB. He debated not going, figuring Angel was just going to be pissed about the fight with Logan, and he didn't have much to say to him anyway. But he went. He'd felt angry and defensive, and when Angel made him promise to call if he was having difficulties, he wasn't sure he'd actually do it. Where before he'd wanted nothing but Angel's approval, now he just felt bitterness.

The next morning, he'd gone to Luke's for breakfast and ended up accidentally punching Cally in the face. He felt bad about it and took her home, but part of him worried that maybe it hadn't been an accident. Maybe he hit her on purpose.

Finishing up the weekend had been running into Piper in the park and taking Veronica home -- who had proceeded to try to get him to talk to her about what was gonig on. How could he tell her that everything was spinning out of control? The only one thing he was sure of anymore was his love for Phoebe, and from what he'd been seeing of the future, maybe that wouldn't even be enough to save him.

"Phoebe, she's telling people that I treat you badly!" Cole protested. "She's nothing but a bitch who likes to hear herself talk. I don't want anything to do with her. I don't care if I hurt her precious feelings. She doesn't give a damn about mine."

"Wrong. She was telling you that she thought that I was being treated badly when she found me upset in the Assistants' Lounge. She knew you had kissed others and didn't know until she had talked to me that I was upset about it." She ran a hand through her hair. "Nadia cares about people and if she didn't care about you and me she wouldn't come at you like she did." She moaned. "You two are always going to fight now if this keeps up."

She looked at him seriously. "Answer me something without getting offended and in a temper, okay?"

"Then tell her to get off my back and leave me alone," Cole grumbled. "Tell her you're fine, we're good, and you get all the kisses and sex you could ever want. Tell her what I did for you at homecoming. Tell her how much I love you. And tell her to keep her damn mouth shut."

He sighed and looked at her. "What?"

"I'll talk to her Cole. Everyone should know by now how much you love me and how much I know you love me. I had already planned to tell anyone who listened what you did for me Friday night... and not because I thought you had anything to prove to everyone else."

She met his eyes.

"Was it your pride or your demon that was wounded by what Nadia said to you about me?"

Cole blinked. "I don't know. She just pissed me off by saying I don't care about you." He thought about it for a moment. "A full demon wouldn't care."

Phoebe smiled at him.

"So you gonna tell her to keep her damn mouth shut?" Cole asked.

Phoebe smiled at him. "I'll talk to her," she promised. "But you've just proven my point. You're acting human... and that's not a bad thing, love."

He sighed and sat down on the bed. "But what about the demon," he said?

Phoebe rested her chin on her knees as she looked at him.

"If you really want me to, I'll start doing research to see if stripping you of your powers is even possible. But Cole..." Phoebe looked concerned. "The demon is part of you... and I don't know if you're positive that destroying part of you is really a good thing."

"Veronica thinks it might be a good idea," Cole said. "I don't know. I just don't want to hurt you. Or hurt someone like Cally again."

"Not if it has the potential to destroy you," Phoebe said calmly. "Honey, even humans accidentally hurt each other... and there is something deep within you that would never let you hurt me. You're just not capable of it."

He reached up and drew her down on top of him. "I love you," he said. "I never want to hurt you. I know I do sometimes, but I hate it."

Phoebe stretched along him and nodded, relaxing in his arms again. "I know love, and the big thing is that you know it happens sometimes. You try not to hurt me and when it does happen sometimes, it tears you apart." She nuzzled him. "That's important. You don't accept that and you make amends on the rare occassion that it does happen. That shows how strong and how human you are."

He nuzzled her neck. "I think we should make out in the common room tomorrow to show Nadia just how happy we are."

Phoebe laughed.

"I'm sure that can be done, love."

"Tomorrow morning, after Criminal Justice?" he said, grinning. "You don't have classes, do you?"

"I don't have any classes on Tuesdays."

He groped her playfully. "Or maybe you should go talk to your 'friend' ~~since she just posted in the assistant's lounge~~ and get her off my back," he suggested.

"Can't I do both?"

"Common room or lobby?" Cole suggested mischieveously. "Front lawn? Where do you want to, um, hook up?"

"Common room is more comfortable."

"I'll see what I can do," Cole said, grinning.

"I do love you, sweetehart. Everything that you are."

"Love you too," he said softly, just content to hold her close.
