Suite 518/520, Tuesday early morning

Agitated, Bel paced his room. First his failure with Veronica and Piper, then Cally's discovery of his powers last night. He was starting to leave a trail of evidence that could eventually point back at him, and that could not be allowed to happen. He'd have to step up his plans, move the coronation forward so he could end this charade.

And in the meantime, maybe he could arrange some sort of distraction, keep attention from falling on himself. So now he pondered this, wondering what he could do -- and who would be a suitable victim.

"Don't press your luck," Bel said. "So, is there something you want?"

[The Source can shield himself, so maybe Schrodinger can try to scan him but it doesn't work -- in such a way that he knows it's being blocked, however. That work?]

"I just wanted to know if you'd mulled over my offer any longer."

"I think I'm going to have to pass on it," Bel said. "I've found myself quite content with the way things are now."

"No worries over mortality? No worries over death? Not feeling weak? Helpless? Useless?"

Bel's eyes narrowed a little, but he said, "Why would I want to be immortal if the people I care about are going to die around me?" he said. "I just realized I have to look at things from another perspective now. And I may not have my powers, but I can still be useful."

"But the shapeshifting isn't, right?" he asked.

"Only a few types of demons can pull that off," Bel said. "Upper level demons can all shift into a human form, but not several different ones like you described."

"So what are you saying?" Cameron frowned. "That this demon is even above that?"

"Or it could be using a spell to shapechange, a glamour," Bel said. He frowned. "It's hard to say. But it definitely sounds like it's a serious threat."

Cameron rubbed a hand through his hair. "Not exactly what I was hoping to hear."

"Sorry," Bel said. "II wish I could give you better news. I'll have Phoebe look into it and let you know what she finds."

"Thanks," Cameron said gratefully. "How's things been here?"

"Did you hear about Cally?" Bel said gravely. "Somebody attacked her last night, hurt her pretty badly. She's in the clinic now."

For a moment Cameron could do nothing but stare at Bel. "No, I haven't. But she only just... Geez. Is she going to be okay?"

"Janet treated her last night," Bel said. "She said Cally's going to be all right. But she's in pretty rough shape."

"Damn," he cursed. "Do they know who did it?"

Bel shook his head. "Nadia found her," he said. "She called me to help get Cally to the clinic. I checked out the place where she was afterwards but couldn't find anything to tell me who did it."

Schrodinger leaned forward, regarding Bel with scrutiny. "Very interesting to hear. As I understand it, most people don't have your self control."

Schrodinger drew his hand out of his pocket ever so slightly, glanced down with eyes, and pulled his hand out all the way to stretch his hands behind his head.

"Any signs of fire?" Cameron asked thoughtfully.

"She wasn't burned at all," Bel confirmed. "And I didn't see anything scorched where we found her, but it was dark. Nadia mentioned dreaming of fire, though."

Cameron drew in a breath. "Cally was in California too," he explained. "Do you think it could have been the same demon?"

"But why would a demon attack Cally?" Bel said. "She's not a witch, she's not a threat."

"No, but it's a bit of a weird coincidence, don't you think?"

"True," Bel agreed. "Maybe since it failed to get Piper, it went after her friends?"

"That's really not good..." Cameron groaned. If he'd just realised it wasn't Veronica at the party, he could have stopped all this. "We need to find out what sort of demon is behind this."
