Calling Phoebe
Dec. 29th, 2005 12:10 amCole dialed Phoebe's cell phone. It rang several times, but she did not pick up, and he was greeted by her voice mail message.
"Hey, sweetheart," he said, hoping his voice didn't betray his turmoil of emotions. "Was just calling to say hello and to see what you wanted to do for New Year's Eve. Do you still want to go to that party? Or we could just spend some time alone. Call me when you get this, okay? Love you. Bye."
He flipped his phone shut and sat down on the edge of the bed. Seraphim and Valkyrie snoozed, curled on the end of the bed. Cole stretched on on the bed, breathing in Phoebe's scent from the pillow. He almost ached from missing her.
The encounter with Crowley still had him shaken. He'd only wanted to reserve a room for after the party for Phoebe and him but the conversation had turned ugly. For some reason, Crowley was acting much like when they first met, before their relationship had turned more pleasant. He encouraged Cole to get the power and respect he craved and deserved, then had threatened Phoebe for no good reason. He knew he was in over his head but he didn't know what to do. He couldn't take Crowley; he'd already tried that and failed. But he couldn't let him hurt Phoebe, either, so the only choice for now was to obey until he could think of what to do. Before Angelus had intervened; now he didn't have him to go to for help. He was on his own.
He'd gone to the gym to try to work off some stress and had run into Alanna, who so helpfully showed him the spell she had used to try to swap Angela for her younger self. He'd given it a try himself but had limited success. He'd need time, practice, and a way to merge the power with his own before he could attempt something similar with Angel and Angelus.
After that he'd gone to Caritas to get a drink and try to relax. Instead he'd run into Veronica Mars, who seemed to go out of her way to annoy him. He was in a foul mood to begin with and took pleasure in being as unpleasant as possible with her. She provoked him, so he provoked her right back with a song he chose just to disturb her. She was probably going to run to Angel or Marty now, and the last thing he wanted to do was deal with either of them.
So now he'd called Phoebe, just to hear her voice, but she was sleeping or didn't hear the phone ring.
Oh well. If he was going to be alone tonight, he might as well spend it over in the comfort of Grissom's rooms. He made sure the kittens had food and water, then headed over to check on the bugs and play with some of Grissom's toys.
