So his first 24 hours in jail hadn't been too bad. He'd gotten visits from five cute girls (even if one of them was responsible for leaving him unable to free himself from the cell) and one cat. Everybody seemed to believe he wasn't guilty and promised to help prove it and find who was setting him up.
The time in between visitors was excruciatingly boring, however, at least until Lana gave him some books and paper and pen. One of the troopers had laughingly tossed him a copy of an old issue of Cosmo as well, but he ignored the garishly pink cover with the big yellow letters spelling out "How to find the clinardis."
He hadn't told anyone about the nightmare yet. He had hinted to Phoebe about his worry that maybe he really had been the one to attack Alllie and he simply didn't remember it, but she had dismissed his fears. Still, he couldn't help but wonder if his demon side was capable of suppressing his human side instead of vice versa. Which was stronger, human soul or demon?
When the troopers turned the lights off in his cell and he couldn't even read anymore, he sat on the bed in the darkness, dreading falling asleep. Between the darkness and the boredom, eventually he drifted off.
He woke up with the sudden need to be out of the cell. He couldn't handle being caged for one second longer. Piper's spell prevented him from shimmering out but it didn't stop him from throwing himself against the wards again and again and again. He wasn't about to let some witch's spell keep him prisoner. No witch's spell was stronger than he.
Finally he punched a hole in the magics and was able to shimmer out of the cell. Appearing on the street, he quickly hurried away before a trooper noticed he was gone.
He hadn't gone far when he saw her. Apparently she hadn't learned a valuable lesson about walking alone after Allie's attack. She was sitting under a tree, her arms wrapped around her knees, staring at the still waters of the duck pond. Perfect.
"You shouldn't be out here alone," he said, coming up behind her.
She started, gasping and looking up at him in first surprise and fear and then relief. "You scared me!" she exclaimed. "What are you doing here? How did you...?"
He offered her his hand and helped her to her feet. "They let me go," he said. "They didn't have enough evidence to hold me I guess." He grinned at her. "Lucky me."
"That's wonderful!" she said, impulsively giving him a quick hug.
She was making this so easy. Almost too easy. "What are you doing out here alone?" he scolded. "It's dangerous. Let me walk you back to the dorms."
"I just wanted some place alone to think about things," she said. "I didn't realize it had gotten so late."
"Lucky it was me who came along and not some nasty demon," he said, grinning at her. She smiled and started to smile at him. Then he shifted into demon form. "Oh, wait," he growled, still grinning. "A nasty demon did come along."
She laughed nervously. "Well, no one is going to mess with us now," she said.
"No," he said, reaching out a black-taloned hand to caress on her cheek. "But I may mess with you."
"You're scaring me," she said in a small voice.
"I know," he said. "And I like it."
She took a few hesitant steps backwards, then broke and ran. Finally, some fun. He let her have a few seconds head start, then started chasing after here. Every time she got near the edge of the park, where someone might hear her scream, he would shimmer in front of her and herd her back inward.
When she tripped over a root and fell to the ground, he gave her a second's respite as she rolled on to her back and scrambled backwards. "Please don't hurt me," she begged, tears rolling down her cheeks.
He reached down and lifted her by her throat, slamming her against a tree. "I'm a demon, Lana," he said. "It's what we do." He snapped her neck and dropped her lifeless body to the ground.
Bel awoke in his cell, shaking. He could still taste Lana's fear, still feel her trembling beneath his hand. And some small part of him he couldn't completely deny liked it.
He didn't sleep for the rest of the night.
