South Attic, late Thursday afternoon (after workshops)

Bel shimmered with Blair into the South Attic's living room. "Make yourself at home," he growled, looking around to see if Phoebe was there. He didn't hear her at the moment.

"So, what do I need to do?" he asked.

Blair laughed and pulled three different candles from his bag. "No, man. I meant the scents of the candles. Although I suppose you could eat them. They are supposed to be all natural."

He sniffed one carefully before licking it. "Ew. No on the eating thing."

Bel regarded the candles dubiously. "You don't have ones that don't smell fruity?" he growled.

"Um...here." Blair held up the tropical passion candle with a shrug. "I think it's supposed to smell like...uh...passion? In the tropics?"

"Fruit is good though, it's pretty tame. Nobody feels threatend by fruit. Although Broots and I almost got mushed by pomengrantes that one time...but that was a totally different situation."

"All right," Bel said. "Tropical passion. You need me to light that?"

Blair shook his head hastily and dug in his backpack for a lighter. "Let's just keep our flames to ourselves, okay?"

He set the candle up on the floor and moved to sit crosslegged in front of it, resting his hands in his lap. "Move to sit like this, man."

Bel awkwardly folded his bulky frame into the position Blair indicated. "Now what?" he said impatiently, wanting to get this over and done with so he could look human again.

Blair pointed at the lit candle between them. "Focus on the flame, man. Try and tune out everything else. Just look at the flame."

He took a deep breath and his voice dropped lower. "It's the only light here, the only warmth. Focus until that's all you see." He waited to see if Bel would calm down and settle into a trance or if he needed to go further.

Bel tried to do as Blair said, but thoughts kept racing through his mind. What if it didn't work? What if he was stuck like this forever? What if he couldn't pretend to be a human -- he really was a demon and nothing could change that? He growled in frustration.

"Hooboy, you're relaxing." Blair teased. "Okay, let's try it a different way."

He scooted closer to the candle and lit a bundle of sage. Blowing it out quickly and blowing the smoke around the room. "Alright, Bel, breathe that in for minute and close your eyes. Pretend you're standing in a kitchen. Can you see the kitchen?"

Closing his eyes, Bel inhaled the scent of burning sage. Kitchen. Right. He could do this. He called to mind the kitchen of the attic. Wasn't hard, it was right behind him.

"I can see it," he said.

Blair grinned and gave the tinest of bounces. "Okay Bel, look at the burners on the stove. They're on full blast. Very hot. Are they gas burners with flames or electric with coils?"

Bel looked at the stove. "Blue flames," he said.

"Blue flames. Really, really hot." Blair took a deep breath and nodded.

"Bel I want you to reach out and turn down the nob for the first flame. It's set on high right now and you need to get it down. Turn the knob and watch the flame go down." He waited a moment before speaking again.

"What's it set on now?"

"Medium," Bel said as he turned the knob. "Am I supposed to turn it lower?"

"Let's get them all to medium first and then we'll see." Blair bit his lip. He had done this meditation by himself before and usually just turned the burners off, but they had never been blue flames for him.

"Move onto the next knob man. Turn it until it's set on medium. Keep going until you've got all the burners on medium."

"Okay," Bel growled. He turned the other three knobs so that the burners were all at medium. "There," he said, feeling strangely accomplished for such a minor task.

"Good job, man." Blair praised quietly. "I think we want to turn them down lower and that might be hard, but I know you can do it."

"You're going to feel much better when those flames are turned down. Grab that first knob again and turn it to low."

Bel took a breath and let it out, feeling kind of foolish as he reached for the first knob again. How was this supposed to help him relax? But he listened to Blair and turned the knob until the flame was on low. Some of the tension seemed to leave his body.

Blair peeked open an eye and watch Bel carefully. "Alright, let's move onto the second knob. The flame is still too high there so you need to move it down to low."

"You can do it, man."

Moving his hand to the second knob, Bel growled a little in frustration. "It's stuck."

"That's okay, don't get angry, man." Blair soothed and dropped his voice a little lower.

"It's your stove Bel. The knob might be a little stiff, but it isn't stuck. You can make it turn, just go slow. Make the flame go lower."

Blair was right. No stiff knob was going to beat him. He tried to turn it again, and this time it moved. He set the flame to low like the first. "Got it," he said.

"Great. You know what to do with the last knobs, man. Turn them to low. Don't get angry if they're hard to turn. You can do it." Blair leaned back and watched Bel carefully.

Bel rolled his neck and shoulders and reached out for the last two knobs. They were as stubborn as the second one, but he was able to get them to move to low.

He began to relax more.

"How ya feeling, Bel? You doing okay?" Blair tried not to bounce, but it was very hard.

"We've just got one last step here, man. We gotta turn those burners all the way and then we're done. Do you think you can do that?"
