Suite 518/520, Wednesday morning

Bel woke up before Phoebe and slipped quietly from the bed so as not to disturb her. She'd been sleeping when he got back last night, so she had not been awake to see how wracked with guilt he was about what he had done. He knew he had to tell her, but he didn't want to confess to stealing the amulet for Raynor.

He headed out to the living area and sank down on the couch, his face in his hands. How the hell was he going to get out of this mess?

"I didn't kill her," Cole said quickly. He didn't confirm that Raynor had, however; that was still too much to admit to Phoebe.

Phoebe nodded, feeling relief. "He's going to try to make you kill other witches, isn't he?"

"I won't do it," Cole said. Of course, he'd said he wouldn't steal the amulet, either, and look where that had gotten him.

"But...my father...."

Phoebe looked at the ground for a long time. "We have to get your father away from him before he forces you..."

She swallowed. Who knew who Raynor would demand that Cole kill. Of course, she had a good idea what he would demand when he found out...

"He wants me to find the second half of the amulet I stole," Cole confessed quietly. He looked up at Phoebe. "You have to find it before I do."

Phoebe nodded and then looked at him. "Tell me everything I need to know about this thing and what it looks like. I'll find it... somehow."

Cole gave her a brief description of what the amulet looked like. "I don't know if there will be anything in the Book of Shadows about it," he said, "but it can't hurt to check."

Phoebe nodded and reached for pen and paper to write down everything he was telling her.

"Do we know what it does and why the great bastard wants it?"

"It's a protection against evil, I guess," Cole said. "He must want it destroyed."

"I should have guessed," she muttered. "Okay, I find it, and I hide it, then."

"And from me," Cole said.

Phoebe was silent for a very long time. "You think he'd order you to attack ... kill me to get it, don't you?"

"I don't know if he's willing to push me that far," Cole said. "Yet. But I won't do it. No matter what."
