Pangolin Cabin, Wednesday morning [NFB]

After calling Marty, Bel returned to the Pangolin cabin to see how Angela had fared last night. The cabins were insulated, of course, but it couldn't have been a comfortable night between the outside chill and lack of blankets.

He was wearing Marty's face again when he blazed into the cabin.

Marty totally didn't expect that to happen.

"What the hell are you talking about?" he said, moving quickly to grab at her arm and prevent her from attacking him again.

"I said to quit playing with me," Angela said, struggling but not being able to free her arm. "Was I supposed to forget the last 24 hours when I picked up the dagger?"

Tears were in her voice.

"You can't say you're going to kill me and then act like everything is fine."

"I never said that!" Marty exclaimed looking shocked. "Angela, I have no idea what you are talking about! I've been looking all over for you since last night!"

Angela dropped the knife, and tears were in her eyes. "You grabbed mee at the Perk and teleported me here," Angela reminded him. "You said, you said you had Bel's powers and could do whatever you wanted. And then you left me here all night, and when you came back this morning you threatened me. You said you'd burn my body so nobody would know."

She sniffled. "You don't remember any of it?"

"I was never at the perk," Marty said quietly and finally letting go of her arm. "I was out buying flowers and then waiting for you at Ching Tai."

Angela's entire body sagged as she started sobbing for real. "I don't know what to believe," she said quietly. "Will you let me go back to campus?"

"Maybe you should go to the clinic first," Marty suggested as he reached out for her. "I'll take you there."

Angela jerked backwards, not letting him touch her. "I'm not sick," she said. "Or hurt. I don't need the clinic."

She gave him a look from the corner of her eye. "How do I know you aren't just waiting to kill me?"

"Angela, I don't know what the fuck happened to you in the last 24 hours but you have to believe me when I say I'd never hurt you," Marty said sincerely. "All I know is you're scared. Of me."

Marty stepped back and held up his hands in a complacent gesture. "I'll do whatever you want right now. You want to go to your room? I'll take you there. Or follow you from a distance if you want. Or I'll the troopers or the mountie here and he or they can take you back right now. Whatever makes you feel safe."

Angela bit her lip. "I want to believe it wasn't you, but I can't," she said. "I can't."

She pointed to the cabin door. "Walk ahead of me back to campus. Leave your gun" — and she made that sound like a curse - "here. After I get home, I don't want to be alone with you until somebody I trust tells me you aren't a demon."

Marty grimaced slightly but did what he was told. He removed the gun from his holster, removed the magazine clip, laid the gun on the floor and turned to face the door.

"Just please talk to me on the way back so I know you're there," he said quietly.

"Okay," Angela agreed, voice shaky. "Let's just go, all right?"

She started walking, Marty ahead of her. "So if it wasn't you, who was it?" she asked, voice wavering.

"I don't know," Marty said with an edge to his voice. "But they're not going to like it when I find out."

That was almost enough to make Angela believe her kidnapper had not really been Marty. Almost.


"Jake Gavin can shapeshift," she said, voice shaking. "But he can't do the other stuff. And he's not ... he is so not evil."

"What did this person who was me do?" Marty said trying to keep control of his voice.

"Teleported here with me," Angela said. "He said you -- he -- had gotten Bel's powers when he took them. He had flames in his eyes. he threw a fireball over my head. Then he magically locked the doors and left me overnight." She gulped, eyes on Marty's back. "This morning he came back and said he had decided he had to kill me so I wouldn't tell."

To say Marty was furious at this moment would be a major understatement.

"Let's get you back home," Marty said clenching his fists. "We'll figure out who did this later."

"Okay," Angela said. She was subdued, more sad and confused than angry.

"If it wasn't you," she added, after a moment, "how did you find me?"

"Someone called and left a voicemail on my cell," Marty replied quietly. "I didn't recognize the voice but I'll be running a trace on the number when I get back to the dorm."

"Thanks," Angela said to his back, still wary.

Then: "You don't have an evil twin, do you?"

"No. Unless you count Rob Gordon," Marty replied humorlessly. "And he wasn't evil last I checked. Or in town for that matter.

"Oh," Angela said, sheepishly.

There didn't seem to be much else she could say. "We're almost there," she noted, as the dorms came into view.

Marty turned around slowly and a looked at Angela. "I'm going to find out who did this to you."

Unless it was you, Angela thought.

"What if he's right in front of me?" She asked.

Marty's jaw snapped tight. He turned around again to head back to the dorm.
