Wednesday night, the roof

Bel was feeling decidedly broody. It was finally starting to sink in that he'd officially betrayed the Underworld. Not like he hadn't before, but now it wasn't a secret. Which meant that it wouldn't be long before Raynor sent someone to kill him or drag him back to the Underworld to face the Source. There were people here who would help him, but he didn't want to be responsible for harm coming to them because of him.

And he'd killed his mother. Not by his own hand, but close enough.

So he went to the place where brooders go: the roof.

"Depends. What did you have in mind?"

"And now we're back to running," Bel said. "Leading any demons looking for me away."

"Bel," Lana said with a sigh. "Don't you think they'd figure out that the quickest way to get you to stop running and come deal with them is to come here and take one of us - probably Phoebe - and torture or kill us till you turn yourself in?"

Lana looked at him seriously. "All your running away will do is leave us without your protection when they decide they need leverage to control you and come back for some of us. And leave you without any allies to watch your back."

"Maybe...maybe you're right," Bel said. He shook his head. "I don't know anymore."

"Then stay until you're sure - one way or another. And..." Lana took a deep breath, hating to even say this, "if you have to go... Take Phoebe with you. You're the only chance she's got. She doesn't stand a chance in hell without you to keep her safe."

"She needs to be with her sisters, though, because of...because of what she is," Bel said. "They're, um, linked." He didn't want to say more, not out in the open, and he didn't know how much Lana already knew.

"Then I guess you'll have to stay," Lana said quietly.

"I haven't made any decision yet," Bel said. "I've just been...thinking."

"I understand that," Lana said quietly. "I've been doing a lot of thinking myself."

"About what?" Bel asked, grateful for a subject change.

"Mostly about what the hell is wrong with me."

Bel blinked. "There's nothing wrong with you."

Lana stared out into the night again. "Sure feels like it. Maybe I'm just cursed though."

"If you were, I bet Phoebe or Piper could tell," Bel said. "And break it."

"Phoebe'd tell me it's all in my head, there's nothing wrong with me. And she'd be right. I just have... terrible luck. People who get close to me either leave or terrible things happen to them."

She laughed a little ruefully. "Maybe I'm the one who should run off. Maybe that would solve your problem."

"There are luck curses out there," Bel said. "And Darklighters who follow humans around just to cause them bad luck so that they fall into despair...." He looked Lana over. "I wonder if that means you're a future Whitelighter."

"Well, the whole falling into despair thing," Lana said, "That fits. I try and I try, but... things just keep happening and I've barely started dealing with one when another hits."


She wrinkled her foreheard, "Future whitelighter? What's that?"

"How much do you know about what Phoebe and her sisters are?" Bel asked. "About what Paige is, and her powers?"

"I know they're witches and that together they're something very special. I know that Paige can orb and heal people sometimes."

Lana shrugged. "That's about it."

"Paige is half Whitelighter," Bel said. "They're kind of a guardian angel. That's where her powers to orb and heal come from. She's the only living Whitelighter that exists. Usually you become a Whitelighter after you die if you've led a good life and helped people."

"So, you're saying maybe bad things happen to me and those around me, because when I die I may become one of these whitelighters?"

Lana shook her head. "I suppose it's possible, but I don't think I'm that good."

"Darklighters -- they're the opposite of Whitelighters -- can sometimes sense when someone is destined to become a Whitelighter," Bel explained. "So they cause torment and pain in the person's life to get them to give up and lose their shot at becoming a Whitelighter. But if that's what it is, then we can find the Darklighter and stop him.

"And you are good," Bel said. "You're up here trying to help me, aren't you?"

"Well, if that's what's happening, they're doing a really good job of it. Honestly..." Lana bit her lip. "I'm finding it really hard *not* to give up."

"As for good..." she shrugged. "I try, but..."
